England in the early summer is beautiful. We spent a few days with Steve's Mum up in Lincolnshire. A good portion of Lincolnshire is flat, having been reclaimed from the fens and sea hundreds of years ago. Dykes and ditches abound, running along roads and keeping the fields from flooding. It is among the richest farm land in the country. Below are photos taken on a walk down one of the roads where Steve's Mum lives.
Farm fields extend in every direction...
... and the roads run straight and flat.
Engineers from the Netherlands were brought over to lend their skill when the fens were being drained... their influence can still be seen today. There are drains (as in ditches) of all sizes, dykes and, of course windmills. The mill below is in Boston. Yes, Boston... the city from which the Pilgrims set out on the Mayflower and for which Boston, Massachusetts is named. There are still references to the Pilgrims and their adventure all over Boston.
