Eton College

A short tour

Spring is here and the weather has turned fine for walking. Steve and I decided to take a walk around
the College. Well, I decided, but I needed Steve to get me into the Schoolyard and Cloisters for free.
I don't know the people that run the tours, but everybody seems to know Steve and he seems to know
everybody. I guess after 20 years of working at the College it should be that way.

The School, founded in 1440 by Henry VI, had 70 "King's Scholars" and a handful of "Oppidans".
the Scholars (Collegers) lived at the school and their education was free. Oppidans, on the other hand,
paid for their schooling and lived "off campus" as we would say today.

School Office seen from Long Walk

Across the road - The Eton High Street - from the School Offices and Long Walk are the Library and
School Hall. Both of them were built to honor the 129 Etonians who died fighting in the Boer War.

School Library built in 1910

School Hall built in 1908
