July 18 - RMC Chertsey
Page 1
In spite of the motorway, Chertsey is a beautiful venue and we
just couldn't resist going back there today. On the new road in there is a
huge oak tree, the likes of which you don't see often in the States. There
is nothing in the photo by which you can gauge the size. But I
can tell you that if I were to stand facing it, with my back to you, and
try to put my arms around the trunk you would easily still see my hands.
They would, possibly, go only about a third the way around it.

Surprisingly, even though we didn't get to the lake
until half eleven in the morning, it was not that busy. We chose a
nice wide peg on the southeastern shore, which cut the noise from the M3
motorway considerably.
The morning was bright. Blue sky and puffy
clouds. Low humidity and a good breeze... at our backs.

Steve wondered if we were setting ourselves at a disadvantage,
but I reminded him we tried it on the opposite shore with the wind in our face
and that didn't do us one bit of good.
As usual, while Steve set up the rigs, I went walk-about... and
took his picture.

I found myself faced with unknown flora again in the form of
these orchid-like flowers.

Ain't nature wonderful? I found a hover fly, one of those
red beetle things and a little black beetle on some more cow parsley or queen
anne's lace. I really do need some field guides.

I did find something I could identify... English Ivy on a tree
stump. Yes, I know it has nothing to do with fishing, it just looked
interesting, sitting there in the shadows.
